  25. There has been a simple bug in version 1.0: if QuickTime is active, a system error occurs when you click on 'About' button. Now it is fixed.

  29. The type and creator are four-character codes used in Macintosh. Every file has its own type/creator information, which allows the Finder to identify the file and its application.

A file should have appropriate type/creator information to work properly. In most cases, you don't need to change the type/creator information of a file because the file is supposed to have correct type/creator information when it was created by an application. That is probably one of the reasons why users are not to easily access the information under the Finder .

  33. There exist, however, many situations that a user wants/needs to modify a file's type/creator information. For an example, if a file's type is 'PICT' or 'TEXT,' then the file can be opened by many other applications than the original creator of the file.
  34. Suppose that you have many text files that were created by various applications such as TeachText, Microsoft Word, MacWrite, MPW Shell, etc., and that you want to read them using your favorite text editor, Alpha. If you change the creator information of the files to 'ALFA,' which is the creator code of Alpha, then you can open the text files as Alpha's documents by double-clicking on the files in the Finder.

  38. BunchTyper is a utility designed for the Macintosh running under System 7.0 or later.  BunchTyper does a simple task: changing the type/creator information of a file or a group of files, but just with the great flexibility.

  42. • Changing the type/creator information of a file is not hard if you already know how to use ResEdit, MaxFiles(DA), FileTyper, etc. Right?
  43.  
  44. There exist, however, three possible cumbersome difficulties that make a user to hesitate to change type/creator info of files:
  45.  
  46.      - it is not always easy to remember the type/creator codes.
  47.      - when you want to change the type/creator info of many files located in many different locations(i.e., subfolders or disks), you need many repetitive operations.
  48.      - if you made a mistake(i.e., changed to wrong type/creator), there's no easy way to restore the original info of files.

  50. BunchTyper is designed to overcome the above annoying situations.
  51.  
  52. With BunchTyper, you can modify the type/creator information of
  53.     - a single file.
  54.     - a group of files located in many different locations.
  55.     - the files in sub-folders
  56.     - locked files.

  58. In addition, BunchTyper
  59.     - shows the type/creator information of the dropped files in a popup menu.
  60.     - shows many known type/creator info in a popup menu.
  61.     - searches only specific types pre-defined.
  62.     - works well in the background while searching files and changing files' info.
  63.     - is System 7 savvy: balloons, movable modal dialogs, etc.
  64.     - and the most importantly, allows a user to revert the last operation.

  66. • Here are some imaginable scenarios for which the BunchTyper is very useful. I, myself, use the BunchTyper for following purposes:
  67.      
  68.      - I have some files which have the generic icon in Finder. I want to see what type/creator info the files have, and if possible, I want to change the type/creator info to the one I can handle.

  70.      - I have a folder containing many subfolders and files within. I want to see what type/creator info the files have: drag-and-drop the folder into BunchTyper's icon with option key pressed, and navigate the popup menus.

  72.      - I want to change the type/creator info of some files temporarily, and go back to the original info after finishing temporary work: change the type/creator info of the files using BunchTyper. Run BunchTyper alone(i.e., no dropped files) again after finishing temporary work. By running BunchTyper repeatedly you can switch the files' type/creator info back and forth.

  74.      - I work with some text files created by Alpha. After I checked the spelling in the files using Microsoft Word, the files become Word's TEXT document.

  76.      - I got a folder(disk) that contains many source files written by MPW Shell. I do not have MPW, so I want to change the files to Think C documents.

  82. The BunchTyper works in the following five steps:
  83. (1) In the Finder, you drag-and-drop files, folders, or volumes into BunchTyper's icon.
  84.  
  85. (2) BunchTyper scans the files in the folders(or subfolders) if necessary.

  87. (3) You give the options in the following-up dialog window.

  89. (4) You press 'Go' button.

  91. (5) BunchTyper changes Type/Creator info of the source files.

  93. • Important: 
  94. You are using System 7, right? If not, the BunchTyper means nothing to you. The BunchTyper fully supports the Balloon Help. So drag-and-drop any file and use Balloon Help to get various help information.

  96. • In the Finder, activate Balloon Help and place the cursor on the BunchTyper icon. You can see useful info:

  111. • If you drag-and-drop the icons of file(s)/folder(s)/disk(s) into BunchTyper's icon, the BunchTyper window will be shown.

  180. • Getting the list of source files
  181.  
  182. You can drag-and-drop any combination of files, folders, and disks into BunchTyper's icon.  Then the BunchTyper will collect the source files according to the following rules:
  183.  
  184. (1) The directly dropped files will be added in the source file list no matter what types the files have.
  185.  
  186. (2) If any of the directly dropped folders(disks) contains a subfolder or subfolders, then you will be asked if you want to include the files in the subfolders or not.
  187.  
  188. (3) The files in dropped folders or the subfolders
  189.  
  190. (4) If you press 'option' key when you drop folders(disks), the pre-defined 'Include types' will be ignored and all the files in subfolders will be added.

  192. • Tips
  193.  
  194.       - You can stop scanning subfolders by typing cmd-period, or clicking 'Stop' button while the progress dialog box being shown.
  195.  
  196.      - BunchTyper has a list file types, called 'Search Types.' When BunchTyper scans subfolders, only the files whose types are included in the 'Search Types' will be included if the option is set. If you press option key while dropping a folder/disk into BunchTyper, the 'Search Types' option is ignored and all the files in the subfolders will be included in the source file list.

  198.      - If you stop changing file info, you will be asked what you want: 'Stop', 'Revert Now', or 'Continue'.

  200.      - After changing info of files, BunchTyper creates a file 
  201. "BunchTyper Log" in the Preferences folder. If you want to revert the type/creator changes you've just made, run BunchTyper again with no files dragged before you change the names and locations of the files to be reverted.

  203.      - Click on 'Save Pref.' button to save current choices. Window positions, added known type/creators, search types will be saved.

  205.      - To add a known file type to the list, select 'Add Known Type...' in the File menu.

  207.      - To add a search file type to the list, select 'Add Search Type...' in the File menu.
  208.       
  209.      - If you select a menu item of a popup menu with the option key pressed, the menu item will be deleted.

  211.     - If you directly drop a file(s) into BunchTyper, it will be in the source file list regardless of "Search Types".

  213.     - If you find any problem in using BunchTyper, remove the file "BunchTyper Preferences" in the "Preferences" folder and try again.

  215.      - There are numerous keyboard shortcuts. Use Balloon Help to see them.

  217.      - All invisible files/folders in subfolders will be neglected.
  218.      - All aliases in subfolders will be neglected.
